Two Months!

Sorry for such a late post but...

Happy Two Months Baby Emerson!

Emerson's second month was great! We were lucky to have daddy home with us for 2 weeks out of the month before he went back to work. It was so nice having 3 weeks with the three of us, well six with the dogs, as we transitioned into this new family.

Our first priority this month was weight gain. With bringing him home under 4lbs, this was very important. We worked very closely with our pediatrician and cardiologist with weekly appointments to monitor him. And he did very well. He was taking all his feedings in 30 minutes and gaining about a half an ounce a day. This is great progress! He even got to enough weight to start his vaccinations. Not such a great thing for him! With him still being so small and so behind on vaccinations, we decided to just have two shots done at each appointment. His legs barely have any fat on them! He was such a champ through it, but are we surprised? Just a cry when he was poked, but than same content baby a minute or two later :)

We received some good news at his first cardiologist appointment. During the fetal echocardiogram it was diagnosed that he had a Complete AV Canal Heart defect. A Complete AV Canal would need surgery on the upper and lower chambers, as well as the valves. But it turned out that his valves were separated and functioning great! So he now has a moderate ASD, and quite large VSD. It was so nice to finally get some good news, while he will still need open heart surgery it wasn't as severe as we expected. They would still like to have surgery around the 4 month mark, adjusted. So that would be six months from his actual birth date. He has started to get a little fluid in his lungs, which is expected, so they started him on diuretic to help release some of that fluid.

We celebrated Emerson's first holiday - Halloween! And as most of you know, that is Grant and mine least favorite holiday. LOL I have a feeling that is going to change in the upcoming years ;) We didnt actually go anywhere because we are trying to keep him healthy until his surgery. But we got him a little doctor onesie, and he looked adorable! Seemed like the perfect costume after all the doctors and nurses are who got us to this first holiday :) THANK YOU!

This month was also filled with lots of snuggles from visitors, celebrating daddy's birthday, mommy and daddy's 4 year anniversary, and getting to know his furry brothers and sister better. The dogs just love him to death, they are so protective. He's the first thing they search for when they wake up and when they come inside from playtime. Its so adorable. Love my little family!

So how was Emerson's second month?

Weight: 5lbs, 4oz

Height: 18.5 inches

Hair Color: Strawberry Blonde

Eye Color: Hazel

Clothing size: He has outgrown the preemie sleepers! They are to short for him now :) But the preemie onesies still fit, but I think he will be out of those very soon to! While he is in newborn clothes, quite a bit of the newborns are still pretty big on him. So we probably have awhile on the newborn size. We are getting great use out of all his clothes this way ;)

Diaper size: Emerson is still sporting the Swaddler Preemie Diapers, although they are getting a little snug.

Feeding: Emerson has been doing good with his bottle feedings. He is gaining about a half an ounce a day with about 300-350ml. The doctors would like to see him gain about an ounce a day and taking in 400-500ml a day. He is still finishing his feedings in about 30 minutes to.

Sleep: He has maintained his 3-4 hour sleeping shifts, although there has been a few nights were he was up every hour. YAWN! On those nights, sleeping on our chest was the only thing that got us through. LOL Grant was off work through most of the month, so we still kept different shifts through half of the month. Me sleeping the midnight shift, and him sleeping the morning shift. We than transitioned to his back to work schedule and it worked out pretty good. Grant did the last feeding of the night, usually 11 or 12. And I did the middle of the night feeding. We got a good 4-5 hour sleep shift on this schedule.

Milestones:
*Reached his due date!
*Celebrated First Holiday
*First Vaccinations

Loves: Tummy Time! Preferably on mommy and daddy's chest. But he is strong enough now that we can do 5 minutes or so on his playmat with a supported pillow to prop him up. He is loving baths again, turns out that we didnt have enough water in the tub, or a mat underneath him. There is that he hates to be naked thing. Once we fixed that he just loves soaking in the tub. He also loves his swing, but at the highest speed possible. I swear that kid was going to fly away. But once you get it high enough, he stops crying. Gets that from his dad, not his scared of heights mom!

Dislikes: Being naked! Oh boy does he hate that. So diaper changes, clothes changes, and coming out of the bathtub are when we hear the high pitch crying. Other than that hes a pretty content baby :)

Adventures: First trip to Detroit Children's Hospital. First family walk. Mommy's first stream of poop flung at her. Ha!

Mommy and Daddy could not get through the month without: The wonderful meals everyone brought us. Big thank you to Grants work, Par-Tech, for putting that together for us!
